Jesus Revisited
Jesus as a young man, poetic in his fashion.
Can you see him in search of something
In the streets of London?
Jesus as an old man; content, self-satisfied,
Staring vacantly from a leather armchair--
Secure in his memories
Of youthful accomplishments.
All quite praiseworthy, to be sure,
But he's lost his former style
In giving up his passion.
Confident in old age of his own worth,
He has assessed himself and found,
On the whole, nothing lacking.
It's a shame martyrs must die this way--
So painlessly.
