PROFESSIONAL SCIENCE MASTER'S IN BIOTECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO
|
Biotechnology has important applications in a wide variety of fields including biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, agribusiness, energy, industry, biodefense, and intellectual property and patents. The Professional Science Master’s program in Biotechnology at USF provides students with a multi-disciplinary background that integrates scientific, business, and ethical aspects of biotechnology. USF is located in one of the main biotechnology hubs of the world, making it possible to partner with an array of companies and organizations to provide education and training. Students completing the PSM program in biotechnology master current techniques in biotechnology and develop management skills that will enable them to pursue a career in the growing biotechnology industry.
The Curriculum
This is a two-year, four-semester Master’s program comprised of 37 units. There are 33 units required as part of the core curriculum that all students must complete. Students must also choose one elective course that can be selected from the biotech-elective list. Undergraduate Biology students can enroll in the 4+1 program and earn both the B.S. degree and a the Professional Science Masters degree in 5 years.

Students in the Biotechnology PSM program can enroll either on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students will take a minimum of eight semester hours of courses per semester. Part-time students take one or two courses. International students must be enrolled on a full-time basis.
Application Deadline
Students are admitted beginning March 15 for the following fall, with a final deadline of May 15.
Admission Requirements
The expected student enrollment in the first three years of the program is 12-20 students annually. The prospective student must have sufficient background to undertake a graduate program in molecular biology and therefore should have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry. However applicants from other science majors may also be accepted provided that they have completed the following undergraduate courses: two semesters of general biology, two semesters of general chemistry, one semester of organic chemistry and genetics. Other undergraduate disciplines with professional work experience in biotechnology may apply. All applicants must meet the following requirements for admission into the PSM in Biotechnology:
