The Exercise and Sport Science Program at the University of San Francisco offers a rich learning environment for its students. The curriculum provides exercise and sport science majors with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will enable them to meet the many challenges of the 21st Century. The Program emphasizes the foundations of knowledge in exercise and sport science and exposes majors to the many possible specializations within the field. The goals of the Exercise and Sport Science Program are to provide the opportunity to gain professional knowledge, appropriate attitudes, and reinforce behaviors that will promote a healthy lifestyle, in addition to preparing our students for successful careers in the field of fitness, wellness, exercise and sport.
Because of our location in one of the most diverse and sophisticated urban environments in the United States, the Department is able to offer a variety of challenging field and internship experiences for all of our students. Internships offer students an excellent opportunity to apply the theory and knowledge they have learned in the classroom in professional practice settings.
Opportunities for off-campus experiences include work at hospitals, clinics, health clubs, public and private schools, sports teams, and corporate fitness programs. On campus opportunities are also available with athletic teams, intramural and recreational programs. Through coursework, field trips, field study and internships, students are able to get hands-on experience in the larger community.
We pride ourselves on our concern for our students' welfare and our close relationship with them. Majors in the program are in small classes which afford a great deal of faculty-student and peer interaction. Each student is assigned a faculty member who will serve as advisor and mentor throughout their tenure at the University. In addition, there are many opportunities for students to engage in individual research and assist faculty in our exercise physiology and biomechanics laboratories.
