Exercise & Sport Science
Concentrations
Within the Exercise and Sport Science major, students may select
from five different emphases, each with its own curriculum. There are also two choices
for ESS minors.
Pre-Physical Therapy
This program provides students with a comprehensive and challenging
curriculum for entrance into graduate programs in physical therapy. Career
opportunities exist in public and private hospitals, athletic training,
sports medicine, and rehabilitation.
Physical Therapy graduate programs vary regarding admissions prerequisites.
The following courses are representative (but not all-inclusive) of prerequisites
required by many professional programs. The majority of Exercise and Sport
Science core courses are also prerequisites for professional programs in
physical therapy.

Pre-Occupational Therapy
This program is designed to prepare students for entrance into graduate
school in occupational therapy. Career opportunities exist in hospitals,
including rehabilitation and acute care, public schools, mental health
centers, nursing homes, physician practices, and home health agencies.

Exercise Physiology and Fitness
This program offers students opportunities to probe the underlying
physiological basis of physical performance and sports activities.
Career opportunities exist as research scientists, exercise physiologists,
fitness and wellness consultants, teachers, and directors, and exercise physiology technicians.

Subject Matter Curriculum (Teaching
and Coaching)
This program prepares students to be teachers and coaches. The Department
is certified by the State of California Department of Education to offer
the Subject Matter Curriculum in Physical Education and Dance. Career opportunities
exist as a public or private school teacher or coach, recreation fitness
consultant, athletic director, and resort recreation and sports director.

Minor
This program prepares individuals for careers in fitness instruction/health management.
Comprehensive instruction is provided in all of the areas of health-related fitness.
