Facilities Management Update for November 4, 2009

The Facilities Management Department is pleased to provide the following activity update as of November 4, 2009. Please keep in mind that we provide this update to keep you apprised of our activities on campus, but that needs and requirements continually change and that the precise schedule and scope of activity for projects may also change. Please contact the Facilities Management Department for any particular detailed information at x6464.

CENTER FOR SCIENCE & INNOVATION
Phase I, the steamline replacement project, has been completed and further work awaits the completion of the funding campaign currently underway.

KORET AIR HANDLING
Craning the old units off the roof of Koret will occur on Monday, November 9. Equipment will be removed from the Swig Gym roof between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and from the roof over the pool between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.  For safety, these respective areas must be completely unoccupied during the appointed times.

The new equipment will be craned into place on the same two roofs during the same times on Thursday, November 12, requiring the same unpopulated areas

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Window installation is completed. The painting contractor is returning to do touch-up concrete work and painting around some of the new windows.

UNIVERSITY CENTER DECK
The deck area around University Center extending around the north, east and south sides of the building from the Harney Plaza – third floor level has joint seals that are in an increasing state of failure. A proposal to repair failures and re-seal the area is moving through the contract process. This work will require some concrete demolition, so some noise and dust in the area should be expected.  Notifications will be forthcoming as soon as a schedule is determined.

LIGHTING RETROFIT
The new lights illuminating the natatorium are installed. New fixtures have been ordered for installation in the Hayes Healy underground garage and that project will move forward as soon as they arrive.  We are working with Athletics scheduling to facilitate the installation of new energy saving lights for the main court and seating areas.

ULRICH FIELD BATTING CAGE
The old pipe and netting cages on the baseball field have been replaced by an all-weather batting structure to facilitate team practice and lessen neighborhood disturbance. The new structure still needs a cyclone fence and gate across the front and an artificial turf floor to be complete. Protection will be installed on the roof and skylights to protect them from baseballs and to help with sound control.

CAMPUS BIKE RACKS
There has been a phenomenal increase in bicycles around campus that, though encouraged by the University, has led to a shortage of appropriate racks for securing them. This has in turn led to bikes being locked to just about anything stationary on campus, including stair handrails.

Utilizing a report generated by the ad hoc Bicycle Committee, Public Safety and Facilities are in the process of replacing old bike racks and installing new ones in new locations to alleviate these issues. Eight new inverted U-style racks are on the cement pad between Gillson and Hayes Healy residence halls. Three have been installed at the southwest corner of Memorial Gym at the top of cardiac hill. About twelve are on Harney Plaza, doubling its previous capacity. Over the next two weeks we hope to install at the plaza outside Cowell 114 on the east end of the building; at the west end of the concrete parking pad on the Golden Gate side of Fromm; on the pad between Fromm and Geschke/Gleeson; and we will replace the racks at the Lone Mountain visitor parking area. Additional locations are under review.

Once a capacity is established for securing bicycles, a bike policy will be introduced so that we can ensure the security of the bicycles on campus and remove the risks and hazards of bicycles in inappropriate locations.

CAMPUS ELEVATORS
While the safe and consistent mechanical operation of campus elevators is covered by contract with an outside vendor (California state law prohibits work on elevators by anyone other than specifically trained elevator mechanics), many of the elevator cars on campus are in need of modernization, both aesthetically and for ADA upgrade compliance. We will prioritize the list according to need, cost, volume of use and visibility and proceed on that basis. Currently we are planning to comprehensively update the two cars in Hayes Healy and the passenger elevator in University Center. The main car in the classroom wing of Lone Mountain will received a new ceiling and lighting system.

NEGOESCO FIELD STEAMLINE
Plans are being studied for the possible replacement of the steamline that transports excess heat generated by the Co-generation engine to the Koret facility where it is used to heat the pool. This work may occur over intersession.

CHRISTMAS SCHEDULE - FACILITIES & MAILROOM
The Facilities Management office will close at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 18 and will reopen Monday, January 4. Routine work orders may be placed through our FAMIS online work order system with the understanding that they will not be processed until after the new year. As usual, we will have an on-call engineer on duty every day from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. for emergency work orders. Please call Public Safety to have the on-call engineer dispatched for any emergency work during this time.

The Mailroom will have very limited operations during December 21st through January 3rd. Personnel will be in the mailroom to sort mail on Monday through Wednesday, December 21st, 22nd & 23rd, but as few departments will be open during this time we will be doing only a few deliveries. Departments requiring their mail during this time are welcome to come to the Mailroom to pick it up. Departments requiring mail during the holy days between Christmas and New Year’s Day should contact the mailroom for pickup availability at x6341.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and patience with our efforts to keep USF functional and beautiful.
