Organization of the Course:
Research Methods in Education
This course is designed as a seminar, which means that a lecture
format will not be followed for the entire class period. The class
will include lecture, discussions, small-group work, and class
presentations. The basic assumption is that students will have read
the assigned readings, will be prepared for small-group work, and
will participate in discussions. Because of the nature of the
small-group work, individuals not attending class for any reason will
be responsible for completing assignments and small-group work.
The course follows the outline of the components of a research
article or proposal, that is, the research problem, the literature
review, the method, the analysis, and the discussion. We will review
research from both scientific and interpretative traditions within
this outline. Students are required to critique and evaluate research
(articles and a dissertation ), write a research prospectus, and
design a research study with the members of a small group.
