GENERAL OBJECTIVES

Few college or university teachers receive instruction in how to present intellectually exciting lectures, to lead engaging discussions, or to relate to students in ways that promote motivation and independent learning. This course is designed to fill that gap. Ever since the beginnings of higher education in the United States, the lecture model has been used in college teaching, that is, the professor reads a lecture and the students take notes. This model has gradually given way to a new understanding of what constitutes effective college teaching. Research on students' academic success and intellectual development has demonstrated the effectiveness of modes of instruction that emphasize active learning and collaborative activities and engage students in intellectual discovery.

 SPECIFIC GOALS

By the end of the semester, the students will have

  • assessed one's philosophy of teaching, learning style, and teaching style;

  • developed a plan and rationale for integrating technology into one’s teaching;
  • integrated teaching experience with recent research and theory on learning; and
  • used a classroom assessment and a classroom research method.
