The name Michigan comes from the Indian word "michigana"
which means "great or large lake".
Michigan became a state on January 26, 1837.
Detroit, Michigan's largest city, is known as the "Motor
City" because it is the birthplace of the automobile. Today, automaking
remains one of the states largest industries.
