My favorite
type of poem is a Japanese poem called a Haiku. A Haiku has only
three lines and a title, so it won't be very hard for you to do!
The first line has 5 syllables (beats). The second line has 7 syllables,
and the last line has 5 syllables again.
Here's an example that I wrote (too bad I can't read it to you!) Read it out loud and clap out the beats:
Tide
Pool
There's
an octopus. (5 beats)
He's
hiding in the tide pool. (7
beats)
The
tide brought him here. (5
beats)
Now it's your turn! On a separate piece of paper, write me a haiku about the tide pool. You can share my title, but the rest is up to you. Think about what you've learned so far.
wet water hermit crab sea anemone
tide starfish swim float waves
algae shell limpet flower plant
sting tentacles arms coral
pinchers sea urchin burrow spines
hedgehogs
cling rocks
food
After you have finished the poem, read it to your teacher. Then click for your next assignment.
