Ready:

You are about to access the most comprehensive digital database of the ancient Greek and Roman world: The Perseus Project at Tufts University.  As you will see, the library consists of primary texts, sources, and literature, as well as visuals of historical artifacts, and thousands of photographs of archeological sites throughout Italy and Greece.  Using the site's resources, you will download a map of Thermopylae and annotate and illustrate it with primary sources. You will then paste it as an interactive prompt in your notebooks.

Set:

  • Download the map of Thermopylae from this site and paste in a draw program (Photoshop) or wordprocessor (Word).

  • Read all about the Battle of Thermopylae from Herodotus's account of the battle. You will need to type "7.208.1" in the "go to" box to access (this is book 7, chapter 208, section 1). Make sure to read through chapter 226 by clicking on the right hand arrow next to" table of contents."

Go:

  • Examine photos of Thermopylae today. Type "thermopylae" into the search box, and find picture No. 9 from the picture library. Copy, shrink, and paste this picture to your "map" page.

  • Now read about the geography of Thermopylae. Copy the most geographically descriptive phrases from the passage and paste it anywhere on your map or near your photo..

  • Now choose four passages from Herodotus that best outline the course of the battle.

  • Include another annotation about the Spartan hero, Dieneces (Herodotus 7.226.1). What did Dieneces say to land him in the annals of history? Paraphrase Herodotus's words about him in your annotation.
