The
column or the post was at the heart of the Greek
architectural system. Built in strict proportion to the
human body, ("man is the measure of all things") it was a
visual metaphor for the human figure which the Greeks
incorporated into their
orders
of
architecture.

The
projecting section of the
entablature or projecting ornamental moulding along the
top of the building is considered the cornice. In the
Parthenon, the cornice and pediment framed the famous
Elgin
Marbles
or three-dimensional reliefs sculpted by
Phidias.
