COMPONENTS OF THE COLUMN AND PEDIMENT

 

The column or the post was at the heart of the Greek architectural system. Built in strict proportion to the human body, ("man is the measure of all things") it was a visual metaphor for the human figure which the Greeks incorporated into their orders of architecture.

The projecting section of the entablature or projecting ornamental moulding along the top of the building is considered the cornice. In the Parthenon, the cornice and pediment framed the famous Elgin Marbles or three-dimensional reliefs sculpted by Phidias.
