The Public Service Program combines courses with fieldwork to provide students a unique public service perspective which allows them to experience public agencies through the eyes of both bureaucrats and their clients. The Program includes one field placement with a federal, state or local bureaucracy, (such as the San Francisco District Attorney's office or the Peace Corps) and another with an appropriate public, non-profit organization serving people (such as the homeless), or goals, such as peace or ending hunger.
Public Service Minor Requirements
The Program requires the following:
Four core courses, chosen from:
- POLS - 218 Public Policy and Administration
- POLS - 396 Public Administration Internship and two of the following:
- POLS - 362 Public Policy
- POLS - 365 Applied Policy Analysis
- POLS - 323 Lawmaking
- POLS - 361 Bureaucratic Politics
- POLS - 364 California Politics
- POLS - 366 Environmental Policy
- POLS - 367 Public Policy: Drug Policy
- POLS - 368 Public Policy: Punishment
One elective chosen from the above list or the Program's interdepartmental list of recommended electives (available in the Politics Department).
