Major in Comparative Literature and Culture

Requirements for the Major in Comparative Literature and Culture

The program requires completion of forty-four (44) units, in addition to the three semesters of a foreign language required of all students in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Students enrolled in the Comparative Literature and Culture Major must:

Study Abroad

Students enrolled in the Comparative Literature and Culture Program are encouraged to spend a semester of study abroad to further enhance their language skills and gain the experience of living in a foreign country. Students may transfer up to twelve (12) units from the study abroad program into the Comparative Literature and Culture major.

Twenty-four (24) of the total forty-four (44) required units for the Comparative Literature and Culture major must be completed in residence at USF.

CATEGORY A: CORE COURSES (12 units)
CATEGORY B: PRIMARY TRACK IN LANGUAGE STUDY (8 units)

Students choose a primary track in Language Study and complete two (2) courses starting at the minimum level of fourth semester of a foreign language, or its equivalent. Students choose from the following languages:

Chinese (8 units)
French (8 units)
German
Hebrew (8 units)
Italian (8 units)
Japanese (8 units)
Latin
Spanish (8 units)
CATEGORY C: SECONDARY TRACK IN LITERATURE, LANGUAGE, OR CULTURE (24 units)

Students choose a secondary track in Literature, Language, or Culture for which they complete six (6) courses.

1. Literature (24 units required)

English (Courses in Literature and/or Writing)
Literature
Writing
Chinese
French
German
Japanese
Spanish or Latin American Studies
Interdisciplinary Studies

2. Language (24 units required)

Students take six (6) courses in a second foreign language: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish: 101-102-201-202 and a minimum of two (2) courses at the 300-level or above in the target language.

and a minimum of two (2) courses at the 300-level or above:

French (24 units)

and a minimum of two (2) courses at the 300-level or above:

German (24 units)

and a minimum of two (2) courses at the 300-level or above:

Japanese (24 units)

and a minimum of two (2) courses at the 300-level or above:

Spanish (24 units)

and a minimum of two (2) courses at the 300-level or above:

3. Culture (24 units required)

Students select six (6) upper-division courses from the following Academic Programs and Departments: African Studies; European Studies; Film Studies; Gender and Sexuality Studies; Latin American Studies; Music; Philosophy; Visual Arts.

Students may also select courses offered by the English Department (Literature or Writing), and/or the Department of Modern and Classical Languages provided that these courses are different from those already required for Category A and B of the program.

In addition to the following listings, students may petition to enroll in a non-listed course if it fulfills comparative literature and culture requirements. This non-listed course must have (1) a cross-disciplinary focus in literature, culture, philosophy, humanities and/or the arts, and (2) be relevant to the student's area of research.
