The Center for the Pacific Rim plays a vital role on
the West Coast in strengthening the San Francisco Bay Area as one of
America's foremost "gateways to the Pacific Rim." Established in 1988,
the Center promotes understanding, communication, and cooperation among the
cultures and economies of the Pacific Rim. The Center administers an interdisciplinary graduate program in Asia Pacific Studies, presents international conferences, special lectures, seminars
and outreach activities for the San Francisco Bay Area urban community,
and sponsors research, online and print publications, and a Visiting
Fellows program.
The Center includes two institutes: a unique interdisciplinary
research institute, the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural
History, and the Japan Policy Research Institute. The center is also
home to the headquarters of the Nautilus Institute for Security and
Sustainable Development, an international non-profit organization
devoted to policy research and outreach related to Northeast Asia energy
and nuclear issues. In addition, the Center exercises administrative
oversight for the College of Arts and Sciences interdisciplinary
undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Asian Studies.
The Center serves as a forum where international educators,
students, lawyers, government officials, and business people meet to
network, exchange ideas, and gain a greater understanding of the
changing dynamics of the Pacific Rim today.
