Postbaccalaureate Pre-medical Program

The University of San Francisco, which is well known for its programs in pre-health professions, recognizes that  after having completed a college degree in Letters a professional career in Medicine becomes an exciting prospect. If you are interested in pursuing such a career, and going to medical school or dental school, we have designed a flexible postgraduate program in pre-medicine that may be right for you.

We believe in a technology based education for all students. If you graduated with high academic standing, and lack any (or all) of the following, you might be interested in our program:

  • 1 year of physics (with laboratory)
  • 1 year of general chemistry (with laboratory)
  • 1 year of organic chemistry (with laboratory)
  • 1 year of general biology (with laboratory)

The above are the core courses we recommend you take at USF to present for applications to medical school. Medical education is highly biological and scientific, and for that reason our program includes additional key courses in biology:

  • Genetics
  • Evolution
  • Human Physiology
  • Human Anatomy
  • Vertebrate Morphogenesis
  • Biochemistry
  • Molecular Biology
  • 1 year of calculus

Depending on how many of the core courses you have already taken, you can enrich your program with these and many other courses at USF. It is recommended that you take at least four or five of the above courses.

But there is more to the program than just taking courses. A genuine interest in medicine should be evidenced by practical experience, which is obtainable by doing volunteer work either in your own home town before you arrive here, or at one of our local hospitals.

Medical research is often one of the goals of our students. To gain some experience, you might do some volunteer research work with some of our faculty or enroll in an independent study option.

The process of applying for medical school is complex, and you will benefit in this program by having access to the same Pre-Professional Health Committee that has served generations of USF students who have taken the traditional pre-medical curriculum. Interviews, counseling, and advising by experienced faculty enhance your chances of achieving your goal.
