? Wondering What to do about Organic Chemistry ?

Options:

A. One semester of Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry plus lab (Chem 236/237, 3 units each)
This is the minimum requirement for the Biology major.

OR

B. The full year of Organic Chemistry plus lab (Chem 230/231/232, 3 units each)
Recommended for students planning to apply to medical and other post-graduate schools.
(See item #5 below.)

Consider the following (and you will still get conflicting advice from faculty and students):

1. Pre-med/pre-dent and other pre-health students (except pre- pharmacy, see #2) will satisfy professional school entry requirements with option B, the full year plus one semester of Organic Chemistry lab. Some schools may accept option B (Chem 236/237) plus the one semester Fundamentals of Biochemistry (Chem 356, 3 units). You need to check the specific requirements of the schools that you intend to apply to. Doing well in these classes will prepare you for the MCAT, DAT, OAT, or the GRE.

Note: Three units of Chem 356 can be counted as upper-division Biology course credit.

2. Pre-pharmacy students or applicants for graduate degrees requiring in-depth organic chemistry/biochemistry should take option B (Chem 230/231/232).

3. If you enjoy chemistry and have the room in your schedule, take option B (Chem 230/231/232).

4. If your learning style is best served by a more detailed approach over a longer period of time than a one semester course, then select option B.

5. Either option will satisfy the Department requirement for Biology majors. However, please note that Organic Chemistry I (Chem 230) alone will not satisfy the Biology requirement. If you take Organic Chemistry I (Chem 230), but do not complete Organic Chemistry II (Chem 231) you must take Fundamental of Organic Chemistry (Chem 236) to meet the minimum Biology major requirement.

6. The Biochemistry minor requires Chem 111/113, Chem 236/237, Chem 260 and a full year of Biochemistry (Chem 350/351, 6 units). Three units of biochemistry (Chem 350 or 351) can be counted as upper-division Biology course credit. (Chem 230/231/232 can be substituted for Chem 236/237). (Note for students planning to minor in Biochemistry: The Spring lecture schedules for Physics 101 and Biochemistry 351 may overlap, check with the Chemistry and Physics Departments before planning to take these year-long sequences in the same academic year.)

7. The Biochemistry major requirements include the courses in option B (Chem 230/231/232).

8. The Chemistry minor requirements include Chem 230 and 231 and a selection of additional Chemistry electives (see the USF Catalog). If you are a Biology major and wish to complete a minor in Chemistry, you will need to have Organic Chemistry lab (Chem 232) as one of these elective courses.
