Advising Tips for Biology Majors and
Undeclared Science Students Advised in the Biology Department

Advising for Spring 2001 preregistration will begin October 30, 2000

Please read this information carefully as students in the College of Arts and Sciences are going to register on the web this semester and procedures are different from the past. You will not have a paper form signed by your advisor. The following are Biology Department guidelines for advising for the up-coming early registration of continuing students for the spring semester. Advising will take place the week of October 30 (see below), pre-registration will start November 6. You will receive a registration date and time along with instructions for web registration from the University Registrar's Office

Note: All freshmen, sophomores, undeclared and new transfer students advised in Biology have an automatic hold on their registration. If you are in one of these categories, you will not be able to register unless you have met with your advisor and they have released the computer hold on your account. All students are encouraged to see an advisor, but juniors and seniors can register without doing so. If you decide not to see an advisor, please check the USF catalog to be sure you are taking the courses you need to graduate. Completing graduation requirements is your responsibility.

1. Your advisor's name is indicated below. If this is your first semester at USF, your advisor is not necessarily the person who signed your registration form for this semester's courses. If you want to make a change of your advisor, please consult the faculty advisor you want to switch to and if they approve, file the change with the secretary in the Biology Department Office (HRN 342).

2. Scheduling for advising appointments will begin on October 25 (appointment schedules will be posted on the bulletin board outside of HRN 342). It is your responsibility to come in and make an appointment to meet with your advisor during the week BEFORE your early registration appointment. Advising appointments will be held the week of October 30. Early registration for spring begins November 6.

3. Please do not wait until the last minute to be advised, your advisor may not be available at the day and time you are allowed to register. For students with an electronic registration hold, your advisor, not any other Biology Department faculty member, must release your hold before you can register for any classes.

4. Before you meet with your advisor, make a list of classes that you plan to take. Be sure that you have completed the pre-requisites for each course and have checked that there are no time conflicts. You should be keeping track of your GEC requirements (e.g., Expository Writing, Statistical Reasoning and Public Speaking requirements should be met first). The Biology curriculum checklist is a convenient way for you to record completed and remaining requirements.

Note: If you are uncertain about your academic record, you can access your USF file through Web for Students. If you have forgotten your PIN, you must go to the Registrar's Office in person.

5. Students currently registered in EW185 should pre-register for Biology 104 and EW 204.

6. Additional advice for students currently enrolled in Biology 104, 105 or 106.

7. Planning ahead and wondering about Organic Chemistry options?

8. You must have at least a combined 2.0 GPA in Biology 104, 105, 106 and 212 to register for upper division Biology courses.

9. Note for students planning to minor in Biochemistry: The spring lecture schedules for Physics 101 and Biochemistry 351 may overlap, do not plan to take these year-long sequences in the same academic year unless you have checked with the Chemistry and Physcis Deparmtents about class schedules.

10. Note for students admitted before 1996: Grad Check will no longer be auditing for the four lab groups. You can follow the curriculum outlined in the most recent USF catalog and reflected in the Biology curriculum checklist. If you have not taken Organic Chemistry Lab (Chem 237), this one course will be waived. Please see your advisor for further details.

11. If you have completed 90 or more credits, you should file a Petition to Graduate with the Graduation Center. (Forms available at the Registrar's Office.)
