Edward L. Kessel Award

To an Outstanding Biology Major

 

The Edward L. Kessel Award will be given to a graduating Biology major with proven academic excellence, demonstrated leadership and support within the Department of Biology with its faculty and students, and high potential for a professional career in the biological sciences.

 

The award is a plaque and a purse of $1000 to be presented during the Spring semester and published in the commencement program.

 

Eligibility: 

 

  1. Must have completed a minimum of 44 units at USF of which 16 must be in upper division Biology courses as a Biology major
  2. Must be eligible to graduate in the Spring Commencement. (A student may apply if there are eight [8] units or less of non-science courses remaining that will be completed in the summer following commencement.)
    Students who completed graduation requirements at the end of the previous fall semester and were eligible to participate in the Fall Commencement ceremony are also allowed to submit an application.
  3. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or greater for all coursework taken at USF, and a 3.50 or greater in all required science courses taken at USF by the end of Intersession preceding the Spring Commencement.

 

Application procedures:

 

1.      Pick up application and recommendation forms in the Biology Office or download the pdf document here.

2.      Submit the completed application form to the Biology Department (Harney 342) with the following documents:

   Printout of your full unofficial transcript from USFconnect (Web for Students)

   A detailed curriculum vitae

   A personal statement of 500 words or less describing your professional career goals.

3.      Have two USF science faculty (at least one from the Biology Department) complete the Kessel Award Recommendation Form and forward it to the Biology Department, Harney 342 (under separate cover from this application form).
