University Student Learning Assurance Committee

The University Student Learning Assurance Committee (USLAC) will serve the vital function of overall coordination for student learning evaluation projects at USF. The USLAC reports directly to the Provost. In response to the strategic priorities set by the USF Leadership Team, the USLAC establishes yearly assessment activities within four main areas of interest: institutional strategic goals, program/service quality and effectiveness, the student/alumni experience, and student learning (see below). The Provost or her designee takes responsibility for informing other divisions of the University of the results and implications of the various student learning evaluation projects. 

Mission

The mission for the University Student Learning Assurance Committee (USLAC) shall be to promote excellence of the University of San Francisco academic and non-academic units through the development of a faculty and staff led student learning evaluation process. The primary function of the USLAC shall be to advise, support and oversee student-centered learning evaluation processes. 

Goals 

The primary goals of the USLAC in meeting its mission shall be to systematically study:

  1. the learning experiences of our students.
  2. the transference and application of learning.
  3. the exploration and evaluation of what our students are learning.
  4. steps that should be taken to assure students are learning.
  5. the achievement of a mission driven student-centered evaluation process.
  6. the evaluation of non-academic, co-curricular, and alumni activities as related to learning.

Charge/Outcomes 

The charge given the USLAC by the Provost shall include, but not be limited to, the following:

  1. Evaluate the alignment with the University's Vision, Mission and Values as well as its strategic goals in all student-focused learning outcomes.
  2. Coordinate the development process of all student-centered learning outcomes.
  3. Educate, encourage and engage faculty, staff, and students in establishing student-centered learning outcomes and their evaluation within academic and co-curricular units.
  4. Initiate and encourage student learning evaluation activities throughout the University.
  5. Make recommendations for improving evaluation activities and the application of evaluation results.
  6. Examine the extant of student learning evaluation practices, recommend new and different strategies for learning outcomes evaluation, and provide counsel aimed at improving and enhancing the effectiveness of all our student learning evaluation practices.
  7. Provide the Provost with an annual report summarizing all institutional student learning evaluation activities for the prior year.
  8. Develop a yearly calendar of evaluation activities that will serve as the University's Student Learning Assurance Plan.
  9. Serve as a resource and consultation group to all those who engage in student-centered learning evaluation.

Student Learning Assurance Committee

The University Student Learning Assurance Committee (USLAC) should include at the minimum the following nine (9) people with expertise and interest in survey development and evaluation: 

  1. Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (Gerardo Marin, Chair )
  2. Director of Student Learning Assurance (Bill Murry)
  3. Director of Center for Institutional Planning and Effectiveness (Alan Ziajka)
  4. Associate Dean for Social Sciences (Vacant)
  5. Assistant Vice President for Student Life (Vacant)
  6. Associate Dean, Academic Program Review & Assessment, A&S (Shirley McGuire)
  7. Academic and Enrollment Services - Information Services (Fred Baldwin)
  8. Faculty members from each of the following schools:
    1. School of Education (Patricia Busk)
    2. College of Arts and Sciences (Keally McBride)
    3. School of Nursing (Kia James)
    4. College of Business and Professional Studies (Robert Schlick)

The chairperson of the group shall be appointed by the Provost selected from among the group members.
