Art History / Arts Management
Scholarship and the Real World
Unlike
traditional art history degrees, USF's offers a unique undergraduate Art
History/Arts Management program that gives students the knowledge, skills
and life experience they will need to become successful professionals in the
art world. Our goal is for students to gain solid grounding in the history of
art and also learn the theoretical and practical skills necessary for work in
an art museum, commercial gallery, or a non-profit arts organization. In addition
to courses in art history, museum studies, graphic design, and professional
practice, the program offers three required internships at a fine arts museum,
a commercial gallery, and a non-profit arts organization. Students learn real-world
arts management skills such as resume writing, interviewing; curating, object
presentation and preservation; educational program development and delivery;
and working with artists, patrons, and clients.
USF's
proximity to the new de
Young Museum in Golden Gate Park offers exciting internship
opportunities in education, development, public programming, among other areas.
Other venues where students intern regularly include: the San
Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Cartoon
Art Museum, the International
Museum of Women, the San
Francisco Museum of Craft + Design, Catharine
Clark Gallery, Franklin
Bowles Gallery, the Mission
Cultural Center, the Center
for the Book, and the San
Francisco Arts Commission Gallery. Many who complete this
degree go on to find employment in regional and national arts organizations
or continue their studies in graduate programs in Art History, Arts Management,
or Museum Studies.
Program Requirements include:
- A year-long chronological Art History survey sequence (two classes)
- Two additional art history electives (choices include: Contemporary Art, Women & Art, Asian Art, African Art, among others)
