Theology and Religious Studies

The Department of Theology and Religious Studies shares in the Catholic, Jesuit mission of the University of San Francisco by examining both the human experience of God and the transmission of that experience through religious traditions, doctrines, and rituals. The Department of Theology and Religious Studies functions within the University to investigate and understand the Catholic tradition, its relation to other Christian traditions, and to other religions of the world. The Department of Theology and Religious Studies is a community of scholars dedicated to exploring the contours of faith and deepening our understanding of the sacred, teaching, conducting research, and serving the theological needs of the university and the wider community outside of the University of San Francisco.

The undergraduate program strives to help students explore systematically and critically human religious experiences in different cultures, so that they may become familiar with the major religious traditions, values and symbols; encourage students to explore the religious dimensions of their own lives; appreciate the role of religion in life, drawing conclusions about human dignity and rights, human freedom and responsibility; and to explore with students the relationship between faith and justice.
