Yuchengo Philippines Studies
The Maria Elena G. Yuchengco Philippines Studies Program was established through a generous grant from well-known Philippine diplomat and industrialist Alfonso Yuchengco.
Philippine Studies classes have allowed students from across schools, majors, and disciplines to learn more about Filipino society, culture, history, and politics. Courses offered also fulfill elective requirements for the Asian American Studies Program, the Asia Pacific Studies Program, and the Ethnic Studies Program. These courses have also attracted many students of non-Filipino descent, whose interest in taking these classes is enhanced by their encounters of Filipino culture and of people of Filipino descent in California.
The Yuchengco Philippine Studies program has enhanced the classroom experience of its students with lectures by many recognized US, Philippine, and Filipino-American scholars, artists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. The program has also funded USF student participation in Philippine conferences, workshops, and sports events all over the United States. It has helped develop the USF library's holdings into one of the best contemporary Filipiniana collections in San Francisco. Consequently, USF students and faculty do not have to leave campus to access materials on the Philippines.
