Media Studies

The Department of Media Studies at the University of San Francisco offers a liberal arts based program in Media Studies that is a unique blend of theory and practice. The program provides critical and cultural analysis of media texts and institutions in conjunction with a hands-on production sequence in audio and video. Students build their production skills as they also learn to analyze and deconstruct media images and to consider the influence of media on individuals and on society. This program of study, the excellence of the department's faculty, and the unique urban context of USF in the multicultural and media-rich city of San Francisco, combine to create a cutting edge department of media studies at USF.

Besides classroom settings, students may also develop their production skills through the media lab, and for credit internships or voluntary work at the University's award-winning radio station, KUSF, its AM station KDNZ, or at the University's student newspaper, The Foghorn. Skill development in "real world" contexts is also encouraged through Internship opportunities in the Bay Area, one of the country's biggest and most creative mainstream and alternative media markets. Media Studies students have interned at all of the local TV and radio stations as well as at print and web based magazines, film, and multi-media companies.
