African Studies

The African Studies Minor is an interdisciplinary program that compliments all of the majors offered at USF. It seeks to expose students to courses with a rich African content so as to deepen their knowledge and enrich their understanding of the history and culture of African peoples in Africa and the peoples of the African Diaspora. The minor spans the humanities, the social sciences, and African and African-American literature. Although Africa faces enormous challenges in the new millennium - globalization, democracy, poverty, environment, AIDS, debt relief, ethnic strife, etc. - the continent has frequently been neglected. While you will explore some of these issues, you will also be given the opportunity to discover the diversity of ethnic, linguistic, religious, and social traditions that have informed the rich cultural heritage of contemporary Africa.
