Jeremy Howard

Distinguished Research Scientist

Jeremy Howard is a Distinguished Research Scientist at the University of San Francisco, as well as an affiliate of and adviser to its Master of Science in Analytics (MSAN) program. In additional to serving as a regular seminar speaker, popular teacher of machine learning, and mentor of practicum projects, Jeremy works on research projects that make sophisticated machine learning techniques easier to use and to understand. He embodies the seriousness of University of San Francisco's investment in analytics education, its facilitation of close faculty-student engagement, and its mission to "change the world from here."

A serial entrepreneur, business strategist, software developer, and committed educator, Jeremy is developing a new startup, called "Strategic Data Science," which aims to make machine learning accessible to non-experts. He is also currently a faculty member at Singularity University, where he teaches data science to government leaders, business executives, research scientists, and graduate students in order to "educate, inspire, and empower" them to apply exponential technologies to address some of humanity's most pressing challenges.

Jeremy is well-known for his previous role as President and Chief Scientist of the data science platform Kaggle. He received top rankings in internationally-competitive data science competitions in 2010 and 2011. Jeremy has also served as founding CEO of two self-funded Australian startups, FastMail and Optimal Decisions Group, that continue to operate successfully. The World Economic Forum has recognized him as a "Young Global Leader" for these achievements.

Jeremy also has eight years of experience in management consulting at some of the world's most well-known firms in that industry, including McKinsey & Co. and AT Kearney, where he became the youngest engagement manager in the company's history and built a new global practice in what is now called "Big Data." A lifelong learner, Jeremy has developed a new system for learning Chinese and has contributed to a range of open source projects as a developer. He regularly provides business commentary in various media outlets.
