Environmental Management Graduate Program
The Program

Apply Now for the Program Starting in the Fall!

Additional courses may be offered. Course offerings may vary each semester and each year.

The Environmental Management program is offered by the Department of Environmental Science and starts every fall (August). This graduate program does not accept applications for the spring semester.

The program provides the necessary background to analyze, assess and manage a wide range of environmental issues, including practical applications to particular problems. Courses cover the scientific, technical, regulatory and public policy knowledge related to environmental decisions, including:

  • Air quality
  • Water quality
  • Solid and hazardous wastes
  • Resource use
  • Human health issues
  • Ecological health issues
  • Environmental economics

The program is designed for students to continue in full-time employment while pursuing the graduate degree. Traditional graduate students also enroll and typically identify and secure an internship during their first semester of studies. Almost all classes in this full-time program are offered on Saturdays (classes are held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with one-hour lunch). Some additional courses are offered on weekday evenings and during the summer. The program can be completed entirely on Saturdays.

The length of the program is 22 months, but there is flexibility if a student needs additional time to complete their program of study.

In addition to lectures, and class discussions and projects, the program provides relevant internet support and generous opportunities for interaction and consultation with faculty, as well as small study groups with other students.

   Program of Study

The program consists of 13 courses (2 units each) and a Master's Project (4 units) for a total of 30 units. Although all course selection is elective and no course is required, some courses are recommended and completed by most Environmental Management students - including Ecoscience, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Risk Assessment and Environmental Risk Management.

The number of course offerings expands each year, as the interests of students and faculty evolve. Students select courses and design their Master's Project in consultation with a faculty advisor. Each student develops a program of study that best builds the skills, knowledge and expertise that the student desires for personal, intellectual and professional development.
