Biography

  Christian Thompson, Associate Professor Ph.D.
Associate Professor: Exercise and Sport Science

Dr. Thompson is originally from Foxborough, Massachusetts and he did his undergraduate work at Cornell University, graduating with a BS in Atmospheric Science.  Once he pulled his head out of the clouds, he completed his MS in Exercise Science at University of Oklahoma, followed by his Ph.D. in Exercise Science at the University of Kansas.

Dr. Thompson came to USF in the Fall of 2002 as an Exercise Physiologist in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science.  He also is the Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Minor in Gerontology, started in 2005.  Dr. Thompson has authored numerous scientific publications on exercise programming for older adults and has developed an exercise training manual for the American Association for Active Lifestyles and Fitness entitled:  Developing an Exercise Program for the Frail and Well Elderly.  He also serves on the Executive Board of the Council of Aging and Adult Development, and is an active member of the Special Interest Group on Aging for the American College of Sports Medicine.  He has appeared in numerous lay publications such as the San Francisco Chronicle, Cleveland Clinic Health Newsletter, Arthritis Advisor, and GOLF Magazine.

At USF, Dr. Thompson is engaged in exercise programming research for older adults.  He developed the Senior Center Active Living Education (SCALE) program, partially funded through Western Athletic Clubs, Inc. and the City of San Francisco, which implements physical activity and health promotion programs at several senior centers in San Francisco.  In 2007, he received a three year, $600,000 grant to expand his SCALE programming to underserved neighborhood senior centers in San Francisco.  Through this funding he intends to study the effectiveness of a progressive falls prevention exercise class on falls and fall risk.

Outside of USF, Dr. Thompson is an avid golfer, having competed in two USGA qualifying events for the Mid-Amateur championship.   His dissertation research was an eight-week conditioning program for older male golfers.  The study was awarded the 2002 Science in Golf Prize and was presented at the World Scientific Congress of Golf meeting in Scotland in July of 2002.

He and his wife, Andrea, are enjoying San Francisco with their two dogs, Cleo and Suzie.
