Biography

  Roberta Ann Johnson
Professor Emeritus: Politics, Program Coordinator: Public Service

Roberta Ann Johnson received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in political science at Harvard University. Her dissertation on the Puerto Rican independence movement was the basis of her book, which was published by Praeger Press, entitled Puerto Rico: Commonwealth or Colony? Her three dozen publications consist of articles in academic journals and edited books, and their focus, in general, is on minorities, women, the disabled, civil rights, and social justice. She has published books on whistleblowing and corruption. Her book, Whistleblowing: When it Works and Why (Lynne Rienner Publishers), was published in 2003 and her edited book, The Struggle Against Corruption: A Comparative Study, which focuses on corruption in four different countries was published by Palgrave/MacMillan in October 2004.

Professor Johnson has taught courses primarily in American politics and public administration. In 1994, she received a federal grant to develop a course on the Homeless and in 2002, she taught the senior seminar with a focus on individual responsibility and politics. Johnson also chaired the USF Public Service Minor Program. In 2003 she won the College Service Award; she won the Distinguished Research Award in 2006, and the Sarlo Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 2007.

Professor Johnson has traveled and taught throughout the world. She had a Fulbright Grant to teach and lecture on American politics and the 2008 American presidential election in Sao Paulo Brazil in November 2008. She was a keynote speaker at the International Conference for Public Administration in Chengdu China in October 2007 and during her 2005-2006 sabbatical, Johnson presented papers in Chengdu and Xiamen China, and in Sydney Australia. In 1992 she was a Fulbright Professor and taught courses on American Government, and on Women and American Society in Indonesia, and in 1989, she was invited to give lectures on American affirmative action at numerous universities in South Africa.
