Biography

  Johnnie Johnson Hafernik
Professor: English as a Second Language

Johnnie Johnson Hafernik has a B.A. in English from Texas State University, an M.A. in linguistics from Michigan State University, and an Ed.D. in Learning and Instruction, School of Education from the University of San Francisco.  Dr. Hafernik has taught a wide variety of ESL courses at all levels and taught linguistics and teacher education courses in the United States, China, and Japan. Her research interests include applied linguistics (second language acquisition, language pedagogy): sociolinguistics; curriculum design; program administration; and issues of ethics and social justice in language education. She has published articles in professional journals, has presented at professional conferences, and has co-authored of two books.  She has taught ESL at the University of San Francisco since 1974 and coordinated the ESL Program from 1991 to 2009.
