Biography

  Brandon Brown
Associate Dean of Sciences: College of Arts and Sciences and Associate Professor: Physics

Brandon R. Brown received a Bachelor's degree in Physics from Rice University in 1992, and he then pursued condensed matter physics at Oregon State University, earning his Ph.D. in May of 1997. His dissertation explored the interplay of magnetic and structural properties in ceramic superconductors, specifically what is known as "flux vortex pinning." After a year of working in science writing based at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Brown came to USF in the fall of 1998.

Brown's laboratory in the Physics Department is equipped to explore the electromagnetic properties of solid matter at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. In addition, he has recently initiated a biophysics research project. He and his collaborators investigate the properties of extracellular materials and model signal processing mechanisms in creatures (such as sharks) that benefit from an electric sixth sense.
