At USF we’re very proud to be named one of the top schools in the country for diversity and international students by U.S. News and World Report, but rankings only tell part of the story. We believe that diversity helps define USF. Our students don’t simply represent an unusually rich group of experiences and backgrounds. They are actively engaged in the world – and in changing the world.
The Multicultural Recruitment and Retention Office (MRR) has been working hard for over a decade to encourage traditionally underrepresented groups, such as African Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans, to make USF their college choice.
During the fall, we visit high schools and participate in college fairs that serve multicultural and first-generation student populations in California, and all around the U.S. During the spring, MRR and two undergraduate student interns coordinate community and on-campus events for newly admitted students. Make the Journey, an overnight program for newly admitted African American students; and Bienvenidos, an overnight program for newly admitted Latino students, are two signature MRR events.
While we always strive to improve, we are proud of our efforts to make students from all backgrounds feel at home. Joeline Navarro, ’10, a psychology major from Los Angeles, puts it best, “Right away, I felt like family on campus, from the students, to teachers, even to the chefs at our cafeteria. Academic resources and support are always available to me.”
