Health Promotion

Health promotion involves working with students, faculty, staff, and community leaders to develop and sustain a campus environment that supports student health and academic success for USF students. We seek to build capacity in individuals, groups, and the entire campus community to improve their own and each others' health. Our work is based on a public health model that focuses on assessing student health risks and assets, analyzing national and local data, and using evidence-based best practices and national standards to design appropriate initiatives for the USF student population.

Some examples of health promotion initiatives at USF include:

Data About USF Student Health

HPS regularly assesses student health needs and assets using a variety of college-appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods. Our goal is to collect a local data set of health factors that impact academic performance and retention. Data is used to generate incidence rates for a variety of health issues on campus, identify protective and risk factors to academic performance, allocate resources, and design prevention initiatives.

USF Student Health Clinic

The USF Student Health Clinic offers a variety of services to students currently enrolled at the university. A valid USF identification card is required for service. The clinic offers hours for drop-in visits as wells as scheduled appointments. The clinic is located in St. Mary's Medical Center, one block from campus.

The clinic is staffed by nurse practitioners who have advanced education in primary health care and work in collaboration with St. Mary's physicians. The USF Clinic staff is committed to quality care and the promotion of optimal health for students. Prevention of disease and health awareness are encouraged in our student clients.

The following services are offered without charge to currently enrolled USF students. A fee may be incurred if laboratory or radiological tests are needed to evaluate a problem or concern. Services include:

The USF Student Health Clinic does not provide birth-control devices or contraceptives used for the purpose of birth control.

Immunizations and screening for communicable disease are available to students for a fee: Measles, Mumps, Rubella; Tetanus; Hepatitis A and B; Varicella (Chicken Pox); Meningococcal and flu vaccines; and TB skin tests.

Additional services offered for a fee include: lab tests, x-rays, referral to specialists, emergency room care, and hospitalization. Students must be evaluated at the USF Clinic before a referral to a specialist can be made if they have health insurance through the USF-sponsored student plan.

Students can be seen at the USF Clinic without health insurance, but if additional diagnostic tests or prescriptions are recommended, the students or their insurance carrier will be responsible for the costs. Although clinic staff can offer assistance, it is ultimately the students' responsibility to determine insurance coverage for the diagnostic tests ordered, hospitalization, etc.

USF Student Health Insurance

International students on F-1 and J-1 visas and registering for classes are automatically enrolled in and covered by the University-sponsored Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan. Domestic students (registered for the minimum number of units) may choose to purchase and enroll in the plan. For more information or to enroll, please contact the Student Insurance office at 415-422-6809 or visit www.usfca.edu/hps/studentinsurance
