Minor in European Studies

The European Studies Program is a 20-unit program that offers interdisciplinary perspectives on twentieth-century Western and Eastern European politics and society. The program combines a European language requirement with courses from Politics, History and other departments. Apart from the course-work, the program encourages-though does not require-students to enroll in a semester abroad program, study tour, or internship program in Europe to acquire experience and knowledge of European society. The Program requires the following:

The student must earn twenty (20) credits in five (5) courses approved by the program. The student must also demonstrate competency in a modern European language (a requirement that may require an additional 4-unit course). The courses must meet the following distribution:

Required Courses

Required introductory course (4 units):

Completion of the Foreign Language Requirement (4 units)

The foreign language competency requirement is based upon competency in reading and speaking knowledge of a modern European language. Competency is confirmed by the completion of the fourth semester of a European language course taught at USF, or its equivalent. USF now offers fourth semester instruction in French, German, and Spanish. Please note that USF offers only three semesters of instruction in Italian and Russian. Students may consult with the coordinator of the European Studies Program or the Modern Languages department for additional information regarding foreign language competency.

Elective courses (16 units):

Choose four of the following:

*Other courses may be approved for elective credit with permission of Program Chair.

Note: Students may complete more than one minor. But in doing so, students may count no more than 2 courses for any two or more minors. In other words, for each 5-course minor, at least 3 of those courses must be unique to that minor, and not be used to satisfy any other minor.
