Johnnie Johnson Hafernik, Program Coordinator

The Department of Communication Studies at USF provides two programs of instruction to students for whom English is not their first language and who wish to improve their English skills.

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for Matriculated Students

ESL classes for matriculated international students are open only to students who have been conditionally admitted to the University and need to improve their English skills. Courses in this program are taught at high intermediate and advanced levels.

ESL Courses

Please see "ESL Course Descriptions".

Intensive ESL Classes for Non-Matriculated Students

In addition to the University ESL courses for matriculated students, the Department of Communication Studies offers intensive English instruction (20-26 hours per week) from intermediate to advanced levels during the Fall and Spring semesters, and three four-week sessions during the Summer. Individuals not admitted to USF degree programs may use these classes to improve their English skills for academic, professional, or personal reasons.

Intensive English Program Courses for Non-matriculated Students

Please see "Intensive English Program Course Descriptions.
