
English Major with Literature Emphasis
This program requires the completion of forty-four (44 units), as follows:
Lower-division (12 units):
- ENGL - 190 Survey of British Literature and Methods and
- ENGL - 191 Survey of American Literature and Methods (lecture)
- ENGL - 192 Introduction to Literary Study
Supporting General Courses Required at the Lower Division:
Upper Division Mid-Level* (20 units):
One course in each of three period seminar courses in either British or American Literature distributed among the following (12 units):
- ENGL - 310 Literature Period Courses: 1100-1700
- ENGL - 320 Literature Period Courses: 1700-1900
- ENGL - 330 Literature Period Courses: 1900-Present
Two courses (8 units) as follows:
Upper Division Senior Level* (12 units)
- *One Upper Division course must focus on a minority issue.
- (All required courses are four (4) units each).
Learning Goals/Outcomes for the B.A. in English
- Students will have acquired a basic understanding of the literary, historical, social, or cultural influences that inform literary works.
- Regardless of the language of the texts or the language of instruction, students will have articulated in writing and discussion their responses to literary texts.
- Students will have developed a basic critical ability to identify, interpret, and evaluate the ideas and formal features of an integrated body of literary texts.
- Students will have developed a sensitivity to the plurality of meanings within a literary text.
