There is no doubt that furthering your education can be costly.
But education is an investment in your future. Studies have shown that individuals
with a Master's or Doctoral degree have greater access to the job market and
consistently earn more than their counterparts without an advanced degree.
There are many options available to graduate students for financing
their education. Most students are interested in fellowships, assistantships,
grants, and loans to help pay for all or part of their higher education. Students
should be aware of the differences of these types of aid and what is available
to them. Students may call the specific program
they are applying to, in order to find out about scholarships and assistantships;
contact the Financial
Aid Office to find out about loans; and as well investigate finances through
outside resources.
-
Fellowships are used to cover a graduate student's educational
expenses while they are working on a research project. Awards may be for
single or multiple years and are usually based on a combination of grades,
GRE scores, publications and letters of recommendation.
-
Assistantships are usually campus-affiliated work assignments
(graduate teaching instructor, research associate positions) that provide
a stipend.
-
Grants are awarded to cover expenses associated with
graduate school - especially for specific projects, travel, computers, etc.
-
Scholarships are provided to a student on the basis of
academic merit
-
Employer Assistance may be available from a students
current employer, students should check with their human resources department
to find out.
-
Loans are available from the government and other private
resources.Information about government and other loans is available through
the Financial
Aid Office.
In addition to visiting the One Stop (Financial Aid) Office at USF, refer to
the list of additional financial aid opportunities below. Please be aware that
these opportunities are available through sources outside of USF and are not
affiliated with the University of San Francisco.
