As chief operating and academic officer of the university, the Provost
and Vice President for Academic Affairs seeks to recruit and retain a
diverse faculty of outstanding teachers and scholars; assists the faculty
in the creation of a learning community characterized by high quality
scholarship and academic rigor, and sustained by a faith that does justice;
directs the academic programs of the University through the deans and
colleges; oversees admissions and transfer policies, faculty and curriculum
development, library resources, and student academic services such as
advising, orientation, registration, financial aid, and disabilities services.
Additionally, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs supports
the planning and budget initiatives of the University; initiatives for
minority recruitment and international/immersion programming opportunities;
and programming in the area of students affairs and university life.
Dr. James L. Wiser was appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs
in January 1998. In January of 1999, he was given the additional title
and duties of University Provost. Prior to his appointment in 1998, he
had served as Senior Vice President and Dean of Faculties at Loyola University
of Chicago since 1989.
Dr. Wiser received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from the
University of Notre Dame and his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy
degrees in Political Science from Duke University. He is a member of Phi
Beta Kappa, Alpha Sigma Nu, Pi Sigma Alpha, and the Golden Key National
Honor Society. He has received fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation,
the Fulbright Program, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
In addition to his work in the United States, Dr. Wiser has studied at
the Free University of Berlin and the University of Innsbruck. His scholarly
interests include Classical Greek political philosophy and contemporary
European political thought. He has published three books and numerous
scholarly articles and has served as a member of the editorial board of
The Journal of Politics. He has served as an evaluator for both the North
Central Association and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
