What to Do in San Francisco
You'll never be bored in San Francisco.
Street festivals, fantastic food from the four corners of the culinary universe, destination museums and cutting-edge art, musical events for every ear (from Outside Lands to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, to Opera-in-the-Park), world-class shopping, every recreational activity under the sun (or fog) — it's all here. And natural beauty? If the surf-to-city vistas from the USF campus take your breath away, some down-to-earth recreation or relaxation in Golden Gate Park is just a short distance away. In addition to popular entertainment, San Francisco also offers a multitude of fine-arts experiences, including the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Opera, the San Francisco Ballet, and First Thursday Art. Museums, from modern to classical to science, offer destinations for the curious. Visit websites for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco site, SFMOMA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the California Academy of Sciences, Asian Art Museum, Museum of the African Diaspora, the Mexican Museum, Contemporary Jewish Museum, Walt Disney Museum and the Exploratorium for a sampling of offerings.
Sports and Recreation
Show your school spirit and support the Dons by attending games and matches scheduled throughout the academic year with USF’s 14 NCAA, West Coast Conference Division I teams. All USF students have access to the award-winning Koret Health and Recreation Center — the hub for intramural and club sports as well as fitness classes and individual workout options. You’ll find Golden Gate Park within walking or biking distance from campus with trails and open spaces for both relaxation and exercise.
Professional sports teams — Golden State Warriors (basketball), San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s (baseball), San Jose Sharks (hockey), Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers (football) often offer student ticket packages.
California state parks — and national parks like the legendary Yosemite — make great weekend camping destinations. For day hikes, try Muir Woods and Mount Tamalpais in Marin County just across the Golden Gate Bridge from campus, or head to Berkeley’s Tilden Park.
