Reflection on gun violence and St. Ignatius Peaceful Protests by Valerie Cabanban10-05-2013
The recent tragic events of the Washington Navy Yard reveal that gun violence remains an issue. We continue to pray for elected officials that handle the legislation to increase gun safety in our country and those victims of gun violence whose stories will not make headlines. Since June, St. Ignatius Parish church has been tolling a bell each day, after the noon Angelus. A bell sounds once for each person who died the day before as a result of firearms, as reported by the Twitter feed @GunDeaths to Slate.com. The parish will continue this practice until the first anniversary of the Newtown, Connecticut tragedies in December.
St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of peace, pray for us.
“Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love.”
