Diversity Scholar Visiting Professorship: Dr. Clarence B. Jones

USF is honored to have Dr. Clarence B. Jones, personal attorney and speechwriter to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., joining our faculty as the institution’s inaugural Diversity Scholar Visiting Professor for Fall 2012 & 2013. Dr. Jones is teaching an undergraduate course titled From Slavery to Obama in the College of Arts and Sciences, Politics Department. As well as a graduate course in the Masters of Public Affairs titled The Art of Advocacy Speechwriting.Each year, the Office of Diversity Engagement and Community Outreach coordinates a visiting professorship by a nationally-recognized diversity scholar and "living legend". We are exalted by Dr. Clarence B. Jones acceptance of this appointment for two academic years, and honored to have this nationally recognized leader in the civil rights movement on campus among USF's faculty.

Guiding Tenets for Visiting Professorship:

  • A living legend or elder of our community who has exemplified social justice and the Jesuit values through their life’s work
  • Situated in the SF/Bay Area
  • May be a scholar, or not an academically trained scholar, but has culturally based knowledge and life experience to share with the USF community
  • Someone who symbolically represents a part of our multicultural American history and can share that experience first-hand through a teaching engagement with USF students
