Sister Ellene Egan

10-30-2013

Our long time faculty member, Sr. Ellene Egan, RSM passed away this summer after a brief battle with Cancer. Sister Ellene received her B.S. from USF in 1971. She began thirty-three years of ministry on the faculty of the University of San Francisco School of Nursing and Health Professions in 1979. She was known for her practical mind and her attention to detail. She is remembered for her honesty, candor, compassion, loyalty and good sense of humor. In addition to teaching, Sister also served as Faculty Chair of the School of Nursing and Treasurer to the USF Faculty Association. She served as a role model to others for her unwavering commitment to the SONHP, the University and the USF Faculty Association. She worked tirelessly to improve the working conditions of all faculty at USF. She was also a Board Member of the California Nurses Association. In 1989 she earned a doctorate in education from USF. In 1991 she received the Teaching Effectiveness Award from the School of Nursing. She served as chairman of the Board of Directors of St. Mary's Medical Center, San Francisco, and was a member of the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities/CYO of San Francisco. She was also active in Most Holy Redeemer Parish in San Francisco, serving on the finance board and as a member of the choir. She served her community of the Sisters of Mercy as a member of the Board of Directors of Mercy High School, Burlingame, a member of the sisters' Retirement Committee, and for two years from July 2006-July 2008 on the leadership team of the Sisters of Mercy in Burlingame.

In 2008 the USF Faculty Association put seed money into a scholarship fund to help financially disadvantaged students. Please note that the scholarship has been renamed the Sister M. Ellene Egan Scholarship Fund in memory of our dearly departed USFFA treasurer and beloved colleague. The scholarship now has around 33k in funds but needs to reach a threshold of 50k in order to begin dispensing individual student awards. Please consider notifying the USF Development Office (www.usfca.edu/Giving/Contact_Us/) to have your donations earmarked for this worthy cause.

We will miss you and be forever grateful for all you did for USF!
