While many students and faculty enjoyed a break from campus
over the summer, construction and renovation work at the University of San
Francisco revved into high gear.
Among the most extensive work done during the summer was an
overhaul of the University Center third floor, which was turned into the new
Center for Academic and Student Achievement (CASA). The CASA renovation, which included an makeover of Parina Lounge and Parina
Lounge Computer Lab, created a centralized space for student academic counseling; student
workshops on test taking, time management, and more; and academic coaching for
first-year and transfer students.
To accommodate CASA office space, the Leo T. McCarthy Center
for Public Service and the Common Good and Public Safety were relocated to 281
Masonic and the University Center fifth floor, respectively.
The Koret Health and Recreation Center’s upper cardio area was redone with new WIFI-, cable television-, and
iPod-ready exercise equipment, new carpeting, and a fresh coat of paint.
The McLaren Conference Center was reconfigured, giving it a
dedicated events entrance. The Phelan Hall entrance was rerouted for residents
and the lobby and restrooms were upgraded. Seismic and emergency light safety
improvements were also made.
The School of Education exterior received a facelift with
new paint. And new landscaping was added in the planters leading up the Lone
Mountain steps. The faculty and staff dining room in The Market Café was
expanded and remodeled.
Meanwhile, construction continued on the John Lo Schiavo S.J.
Center for Science and Innovation (CSI) during the summer, as it passed the
halfway point of construction on its way to a July 2013 completion.
