Social
media is part of many people’s daily lives. It is also a growing part of everyday
business, particularly businesses in the tourism and hospitality industry.
From customers
checking in on FourSquare at a favorite new restaurant to shoppers cashing in a
Living Social coupon for a weeklong cruise, social media is how more and more
consumers are sharing recommendations and finding out about industry deals.
Recognizing
the trend, University of San Francisco hospitality management students have
chosen social media as the focus of their upcoming Hospitality Industry
Symposium and Richard L. Swig Leadership Luncheon: The Yin and Yang of Social
Media and Hospitality on April 27. The half-day symposium, at the Fairmont San
Francisco hotel, was conceived of and put together by USF hospitality
management students. They expect about 200 hospitality and business students
and faculty from Bay Area colleges to attend.
“It’s
all about thinking smarter and being ahead of the competition,” said Katherine
Hammond ’12, a USF hospitality industry student and the technology and
marketing manager for the event.
Michael Tchong, the symposium’s keynote speaker and
author of “Social Engagement Marketing,” will discuss social media marketing
techniques.
“Many
businesses are trying to use social media as a marketing tool,” said Michelle
Millar, USF associate professor of hospitality management. “Any student who
knows how to do that effectively could highlight that on their resume.”
