Foreword Summer Bridge Program

Foreword Summer Bridge Program 2008

Think of your college career as a book that you are about to begin. Before you start Chapter One, you read the introduction, or foreword. The Foreword Summer Bridge Program at the University of San Francisco is your introduction to college, the book that you will soon open and begin exploring.

"I wasn't too sure about participating in the Foreword Program when I got the application in the mail since it required me to miss out on my last two precious weeks of summer vacation before I officially became a college Freshman.  My parents urged me to apply anyway, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I could have made prior to college.  Foreword allowed me to gain a head start in my college career by surrounding me with a community of peers, professors, and USF faculty that gave me the necessary skills and strength to succeed." - Mercedes Robinson, Foreword 2005

The Foreword Summer Bridge Program is a transition program for incoming first year students who would benefit from an intensive, two-week structured program that provides both an academic and social preparation for the rigors of the First Year and beyond at the University of San Francisco. The program provides participants with two units towards graduation as well as an orientation to the University and the City of San Francisco. Foreword is a residential program, and all participants are expected to live on campus for the duration of the program.

The Foreword Program seeks students who feel they would benefit from the program and are willing to be full participants in the program. There is an orientation for parents/families on the first day of the program that is highly recommended.

Peer Mentors, former Foreword participants, live with and provide support with the participants during the program. As the "experts," they help the participants transition to the college experience and provide students with contexts to become successful members of the University community. Participants will take four courses while in the program, all taught by University staff/faculty: Written Communication, College Math, Contemporary Issues and Computer Literacy. Success Workshops are also given, for example, Time Management, Emotional Intelligence, Health and Wellness, and Career Preparation. There are field trips and community service events, and finally, a graduation ceremony held on the last day. All events are mandatory.

This year's program will take place from August 10, 2008 to August 22, 2008.
