Tutor Requirements

To fulfill the federal, city, and university requirements for America Reads, please use the following list and instructions (refer to cover page for due dates):
  1. You must have federal work study to be an America Reads tutor.

  1. I-9 Form. If you have not worked on campus before you will need to fill out an I-9 form at One Stop (LM 251). Please be prepared to show:
  • Valid state issued I.D. and social security card, or
  • Valid passport, or
  • See One Stop for other acceptable documentation that proves identity and employment eligibility.

  1. Work Study Clearance Forms. Work Study Clearance forms can be picked up after you have filled out an I-9 form. The completion of these forms will allow you to be paid by America Reads. To do this, please do the following:
  • Work study clearance forms can be requested at One Stop (LM 251).
  • Student Employment will email your Work Clearance form to you.
  • Sign the form electronically and forward it to the America Reads Graduate Assistant at americareads@usfca.edu.

  1. Livescan/Fingerprinting. Tutors working in the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) must be fingerprinted. To do this, please do the following:
  • Call (415) 522-6738 ext. 7 to set up an individual Livescan appointment with Rayna Coats.  Please make sure to mention that you are a literacy volunteer with the America Reads program at USF. Your appointment will be located at:

  • Arrive 10 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time with the following items:

a. A valid, government-issued photo ID, such as a license or a passport.
b. Social Security Number.

  • Call back in 4 business days to receive results of the Livescan.
  • Return results to the Learning & Writing Center, Cowell 227.  
  • The cost is $44.00; please save your receipt, as you will be reimbursed by America Reads.

  1. TB Test. The SFUSD requires a TB test every three years. If you have results of a current TB test (completed within the last 3 years), you may fax it to the Learning & Writing Center at (415) 422-2194. If you need a TB test, please do the following:
  • Call the USF Student Health Clinic at (415) 750-4980 to make an appointment.
  • Once they give you the test, you must return to the Clinic in three days to have the test read. Note: do not make an appointment on a Wednesday or a Thursday, as your test will not be able to be read on the weekend.
  • The cost is $33.00; please save your receipt, as you will be reimbursed by America Reads.

  1. Attend America Reads meetings for new tutors on September 1 at 5:00 in Cowell 223 and September 9 at 5:00 PM (Location TBA).  Returning tutors will meet on September 8 at 5:00 PM in Cowell 223.  

 

  1. Be able to sign up for the America Reads course which begins the week of September 14 (new tutor courses meet on Mondays from 4-5 PM or Tuesdays from 6-7 PM, returning tutor courses will be online).  Contact the America Reads Graduate Assistant with questions.
