The USF Boxing Club was formed in 1997 and
dedicates itself to the development of boxing skills and physical conditioning.
Since its inception, the Boxing Club has produced many outstanding boxers. Most recently Nargis Shaghasi, Adrianna Boursalian and Connor Morgan were crowned National Champions at the inagural USIBA National Championships hosted at USF. The event marked an important moment in collegiate boxing history as it was the first time women and men were allowed to compete on the same stage. Club membership is
open to everyone from those interested in competing to those looking for the challenge of
a rigorous workout.
USF boxing is considered a national powerhouse. The club has had multiple Golden Gloves champions as well as winning regional titles and national championships. The club has a diverse membership including people from the region, the nation and international students. The club boasts a 96% graduation rate (4 year
enrollment) with many being complemented with
honorable mentions and the dean's list.
The USF Boxing Club has been coached by Angelo
F. Merino, MASFM, since it's inception. Angelo is certified as a Level-2 Coach (USA
Amateurs Boxing Association) both locally and nationally, and internationally
by the Amateurs Boxing Association of the Philippines. Additionally Angelo has
acquired training from a number of world renowned trainer's in boxing including
Nonito Donaire, Sr. and Patricio Gaspi (Philippines), Sr. Enrique Tissert
(Cuba), and Candelario Lopez (Team USA/Olympic coach). The team is also instructed by USA Boxing certified coach
Joaquin "Jay" Gonzalez, PhD.
The Boxing Club trains Monday through Friday from 6:00-9:00pm in the Boxing Room located
on the basement level of the Koret Sports and Recreation Center. The space includes a full-size ring and is considered one of the best training facilities in the country.
