Voluntary 403(b) Retirement Plan

With many of us living longer, healthier lives, it’s up to you to make sure you’ll have a nest egg for a comfortable retirement. The voluntary 403(b) retirement plan helps you save now for future living expenses, while also saving on taxes today.

Here’s how it works:

Auto-Enrollment

  • You will be automatically enrolled in the 403(b) plan with TIAA-CREF at 3% of your salary.
  • Pre-Tax contributions are deducted from your paycheck and deposited into an established TIAA-CREF account. You can choose how to invest these contributions by simply accessing your TIAA-CREF account online or speaking with a customer service representative. The Qualified Default Investment Alternative (QDIA), if you choose not to make an election, is the TIAA-CREF Lifecycle Funds.
  • You can increase or decrease the amount of your contribution or end auto enrollment at any time.
  • Your contributions are vested immediately.

Enrollment by Salary Reduction Agreement

If you are an eligible employee and you were not automatically enrolled in the Plan or opt to contribute a different amount you can do so at any time.

  • First, complete a Salary Reduction Agreement to elect a whole percentage or flat dollar amount you want to contribute per pay period as a pre-tax contribution or an after-tax Roth contribution and select an investment company (TIAA-CREF or Fidelity).
  • Next, complete an investment company application form, if were not previously enrolled in the Plan, and choose your investments. Return both forms to the Human Resources-Benefits Office.
  • You are eligible to contribute any amount up to the IRS limits of $17,500 up to age 50 and $23,000 for age 50 plus.
  • Your contributions are vested immediately.

Roth 403(b)

Roth 403(b) can offer an additional way to save for retirement and generate tax-free retirement income with TIAA-CREF and/or Fidelity Investments. Unlike a traditional, pretax 403(b), the Roth 403(b) allows you to contribute after-tax dollars and then withdraw tax-free dollars from your account when you retire.

Take the time to establish and monitor your financial goals at least annually by scheduling an appointment with a representative from the retirement plan provider. Here’s how:
