Frequently Asked Questions

WHO CAN VOLUNTEER AS A MARSHAL?

Any USF non-student staff or faculty member may volunteer, however, you should check with your supervisor before signing up.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?
Check-in is 1 hour, 15 minutes before the ceremony begins and the total time commitment is usually 2.5 to 3 hours per ceremony.

WHAT TYPES OF VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE?
Marshals participate in all aspects of the ceremonies. Click here for detailed marshal position descriptions. You may request up to two positions of interest on the participation form. Due to high demand and limited need for some positions, not all requests for a specific position can be fulfilled.

WILL I RECEIVE COMPENSATION FOR MY TIME?
The suggested practice is that marshals receive a half-day of compensatory time per ceremony worked outside of regular business hours, although the final decision to give you time rests with your supervisor. This means, if your supervisor approves, you can receive compensatory time for the 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday ceremonies and each ceremony on Saturday. Your supervisor will get a letter confirming your participation two to three weeks after the ceremony.

IS THERE A MARSHAL REHEARSAL/WHEN WILL I RECEIVE INSTRUCTIONS?

A voluntary marshal rehearsal is held each semester before the ceremonies to help you prepare for the events. The date of the December 2012 marshal rehearsal will be Wednesday, December 13th. All marshals, especially those new to the process, are highly encouraged to attend. Detailed day of event instructions will also be emailed near the rehearsal date.

WHEN IS THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER/HOW DO I REGISTER?
