Tips for enhancing your counseling experience:
- Be on time for your appointments.
- Arrive 20-30 minutes early for your initial appointment and be prepared to fill out some paperwork (have your 8 digit USF student ID number with you).
- Be honest with your counselor. Counseling is a safe place to tell the truth without being judged.
- Give your counselor feedback on how your counseling is going.
Making an appointment at Counseling and Psychological Services is easy. Any currently enrolled degree-seeking student can receive brief, free, and confidential individual or couple (both parties must be USF students) counseling each academic year. Students desiring longer-term counseling will be provided with referral options.
Although CAPS staff strive to see students as expediently
as possible there are times during the semester when the center is
heavily
impacted, most often during midterm and final exams. The
typical wait for service is less than
three weeks.
Faculty and staff are welcome to use Counseling and Psychological
Services for an initial evaluation or referral to outside agencies.
Before you become an actual client of the center a brief consultation appointment will be scheduled. Please call our Office Manager at 415-422-6352 or drop in at Gillson Hall, Lower Level to make this appointment.
Regular office hours are from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through
Friday, with a limited number of evening appointments available. A
voicemail system is provided to receive your after-hours messages.
Substance Abuse Assessment
We encourage students who are mandated for drug/alcohol assessment
to schedule their appointments early rather than wait until their deadline for
completion. Mandated students have the lowest priority for appointments when
there is a waiting list for services. We are happy to furnish students with
appropriate referrals to providers off campus.
If a life threatening emergency exists students will be seen the same day.
