The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a
leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced
biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health
professions, and excellence in patient care. (http://www.ucsf.edu)
The
University of San Francisco (USF) is a primarily undergraduate private Jesuit
university with a strong
commitment to academic excellence and social justice and is one of the most diverse universities in America. (http://www.usfca.edu)
The University of San Francisco/University of
California San Francisco Partnership for Undergraduate Mentoring and Teaching
(PUMT) program was developed to address two objectives:
To provide UCSF graduate
students and post-doctoral researchers/clinicians who want to pursue faculty
careers with opportunities to teach and mentor undergraduate students, and
To provide USF undergraduate
science majors with highly qualified instructors for lecture and laboratory
classes, and provide opportunities for students to gain research experience.
The Teaching
Program
The
teaching program offers opportunities for UCSF graduate students and
postdoctoral researchers/clinicians to acquire teaching experience that will be
helpful for future applications for faculty positions and other
education-related career goals. Participants are hired as part time faculty who
are mentored by full time USF faculty and through the UCSF Preparing Future
Faculty program. In turn, USF students benefit by receiving instruction from
highly qualified part time faculty. Part time teaching positions are announced
through the UCSF Preparing Future Faculty Program listserv.
The Research
Mentoring Program
The
research mentoring program is designed to both enhance research experiences for
USF science majors, and to provide UCSF graduate students and post doctoral
researchers with opportunities to acquire undergraduate mentoring experience,
as well as assistance with their research projects.
Research opportunities are posted
on USF’s Blackboard system at BIOL_001: Department of Biology Electronic Information
